SAPPHIRE, N.C. -- The Elon men's golf team improved six spots after firing a final round 285 to finish with a two-round score of 580 and placed in a tie for ninth among the 18 teams at The Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina on Tuesday.
Jayson Judy led the Phoenix push with a final round of 71, which, when combined with his first round score of 70, gave the senior a 141 to tie for 10th individually. Furman took home the team title with a two round score of 567.
Judy finished the tournament scoring even on par-three holes and totaled 24 pars over his two rounds of play.
Phil Bartholomew shot a 144 (72-72) to tie for 28th in the field of 102 golfers. He led all players with 28 pars. With a final round 71,
Tanner Norton placed in a tie for 42nd with a two-round score of 147. Norton was second in the field by shooting -2 on par-three holes.
Scott Hockemeyer also fired a second round 71 which gave him a tournament score of 148 to tie for 47th. Finally,
Miller Robins carded a 74 to follow up his first round 77 for a total of 151, tying for 71st in the field.
Furman's Garland Ferrell shot a 135 (-7) to win the individual title by two strokes over Akron's Lucas Murray.
The Paladins' 567 was -1 for the tournament as they claimed the team title by three strokes over both Kentucky (279-291--570) and East Carolina (290-280--570). Vanderbilt (289-284--573) and Winthrop (286-288--574) rounded out the top-five.
Other Southern Conference entrants included Chattanooga (8th; 300-278--578), Wofford (T9th; 292-288--580), Samford (T13th; 291-292--583), College of Charleston (T15th; 294-297--591) and Appalachian State (18th; 293-304--597).
