SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Eric Breitenstien ran for 217 yards and four touchdowns to lead the ninth-ranked Wofford Terriers to a 48-28 Southern Conference football victory over the visiting Elon Phoenix on Saturday afternoon.  The Terrier win ended a stretch of five consecutive games won by the road team in this series.

Elon's Aaron Mellette caught nine passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns to move into the SoCon's career top 10 chart in TD receptions.  The junior from Sanford, N.C. now has 23 touchdown grabs to sit in a tie for seventh in league history.  He also posted his 13th career 100-yard game, the fifth-most in SoCon history.

"We tried to play a perfect game to get a win and it's tough to play a perfect game," said Elon head coach Jason Swepson.  "We still have to do our job as coaches and coach the kids up.  I think we played as a team today.  We still have a lot to play for.  The team still believes and we still have a chance to get a winning season."

Breitenstein's performance marked the first time that Elon allowed a 200-yard runner since Western Kentucky's Willie Taggart ran for 217 yards on Oct. 24, 1998.

Wofford (6-2, 4-1 SoCon) took the opening kickoff and marched 83 yards on six plays to take an early 7-0 lead.  The drive began at the Terriers’ 17 with a 21-yard rush by Breitenstein.  The Walter Payton Award nominee then picked up 25 yards on the next play as Wofford moved to the Elon 37.  Facing a fourth-and-inches from the Elon 28, Breitenstein took the handoff up the middle and ran it in for the score.

Elon (4-5, 2-4) began its second possession of the game at its own 34.  After converting a third-and-one to get the ball to the Elon 45, Thomas Wilson rolled left and found Andre Labinowicz for a 14-yard gain to move the chains again.  The next play moved the ball to the Wofford 29 as Wilson connected with Mellette for a 12-yard gain.  On third-and-seven, Wilson hit Darrius McQueen for six yards, setting up a fourth-and-inches.  Wilson picked up two yards on a sneak to the 18 to pick up keep the drive alive.  After Wilson ran it for another five yards, he went back to Mellette for a gain of 12 to the one.  Mellette nearly got in for the touchdown, but was knocked out of bound by Mike Niam inches from the goal line.  Two plays later, Dontay Taylor dove over the pile for his seventh touchdown of the year.  Adam Shreiner’s PAT knotted the score at seven with 2:36 left on the first quarter clock.

After stopping Wofford on a fourth-down try, the Phoenix took over at its own 37 and marched 63 yards on just five plays to take a 14-7 lead when Wilson found Mellette deep for a 39-yard touchdown pass.  Mellette had two catches for 54 yards on the drive, while McQueen had the other nine yards on a catch-and-run.

An Elon punt gave the ball back to Wofford at its own 44 before Breitenstein raced 49 yards on first down to set up a first-and-goal at the Elon seven.  Three plays later, Breitenstein took it in from a yard out to tie the game at 14 with just over 7:30 remaining in the first half.

Blake Wylie picked off a Wilson pass and brought it back 22 yards to the Elon 21 late in the first half, setting up Breitenstein’s third rushing touchdown of the day.  Breitenstein took it in from three yards out after gaining 18 yards on the first play of the drive.  The TD put the Terriers back in front 21-14 with just 43 seconds left on the clock.

Another fourth-down stop by the Elon defense gave the Phoenix the ball at its own 35 mid-way through the third quarter.  Harris ran for 14 yards on first down to move to midfield.  On third-and-five from the 46, Wilson went deep over the middle to Jeremy Peterson who made the grab and raced the distance to the end zone as the Phoenix tied the game back up at 21.

Elon forced Wofford to punt, but the kick bounced off the returner’s chest and right to Wofford’s Michael Harpe and the Terriers took over at the Elon 18.  Brenton Bersin gained 11 yards on the pitch to take it to the Elon four on third-and-seven before Breitenstein found the end zone for the fourth time on the afternoon to put Wofford back in front 28-21 with 3:41 to go in the third quarter.

Wofford pushed its lead to 35-21 with just 30 seconds left in the third quarter when Qay Bell picked up a blocked punt and brought it back 42 yards for a touchdown.  The Terriers tacked on another score when Mitch Allen ran it 61 yards for a score on third-and-23.  The PAT was no good and Elon trailed 41-21 with 12:40 to go.

Elon answered with a quick score of its own.  The Phoenix drove 69 yards on just three plays as Mellette hauled in a 42-yard pass from Wilson for his second score of the afternoon.  After the TD, Elon trailed 41-28 with 11:27 to play.

Wofford got the ball back and marched down the field before Allen sneaked the ball in from a yard out with 6:04 showing on the clock.  The TD and PAT made it a 48-28 game.

Wilson ended the day 27-of-35 passing for 342 yards and three touchdowns.

The Terriers ran the ball 61 times for 465 yards on the day.  Allen hit the century mark by carrying 12 times for 100 yards.
