SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Elon men’s soccer team claimed the top seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship after clinching the regular-season title on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The defending champion Phoenix will host No. 8 seed Davidson on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at Rudd Field.
The event begins Saturday with three first-round games, with first-round action wrapping up Sunday. The semifinals and championship will be played at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on Nov. 8 and 10, respectively, with the championship game being broadcast on ESPN3.
The 23
rd ranked Phoenix won its second SoCon regular-season title after College of Charleston and Wofford went to a scoreless draw on Tuesday night. Elon won the championship outright after going 5-2 during league play and 12-4-2 overall on the year and will face the Wildcats (6-10-1, 2-5 SoCon). Elon defeated Davidson, 2-0, on Sept. 28, earlier this season.
Second-seeded Furman, which also spent several weeks in the national rankings this year, finished the regular season with a 12-3-3 mark and a 4-2-1 league record. The Paladins will host No. 7 seed Wofford (2-4-1 SoCon) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
College of Charleston also turned in a 4-2-1 SoCon record but lost the tiebreaker to Furman to take the third seed. The Cougars will host No. 6 seed Appalachian State (2-3-2 SoCon) at Patriots Point on Saturday at 2 p.m.
No. 4 seed Georgia Southern turned in a 3-3-1 SoCon mark and will host No. 5 seed UNCG (3-4 SoCon) at 4 p.m. Sunday.
The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship.
