ELON, N.C. -- With just over a week remaining in preseason camp and a little more than two weeks until the first kickoff of the season, the Elon Phoenix football team continued its workouts on the Hunt and Tucker practice fields on Friday afternoon.
The maroon and gold's final practice before scrimmage number two went 20 periods and lasted just a little over two hours. Here are coach
Jason Swepson's thoughts following the session:
Swepson on having five practices in three days:
"I think we're mentally tough. Physically, we are where we need to be. We're a little banged up. We're making some little mistakes, but I think it's because guys are a little bit tired. They fought through it and I'm excited that we're coming together as a team."
Swepson on yesterday's two-a-day:
"I threw them a bone in the morning when we just came out in helmets. But we were coming off of a very physical practice the day before. It really set the tone for the rest of the day and they came out and had a great evening practice last night. They know and like the routine and like playing football."
Swepson on Saturday's Fan Appreciation Day scrimmage:
"Our goal tomorrow is to get through healthy. We're going to do some situational stuff. I think fans will see a physical football team that's doing the right things between the lines. The coaches have done a great job and the players have been very coachable. Now we have to see if that turns into production. Hopefully the ones can get 50-55 plays and about that amount for the twos. We'll have to have the twos run some with the ones and the threes some with the twos."
Swepson on position battles:
"At the inside wide receiver position we have
Kierre Brown back. We moved
Blake Rice there and then you have
Jeremy Peterson and
Andre Davis. Those guys are great playmakers. On the outside you have
Aaron Mellette and then you have
Ricky Brown who is having a great camp and
Montario Hunter who has gotten a year of experience.
Rasaun Rorie has been banged up, but is in the mix as well. Also, at the defensive line, we have eight guys who could probably start anywhere in this league. I don't think that will be a problem as all eight will play and keep us fresh in the fourth quarter. At running back, the freshmen are really pushing
Matt Eastman and
Karl Bostick. We've been having some good competition. Tomorrow will tell us a lot. I've been preaching to the team that I'm looking for the top 22, not the top 11. I think they understand that and that if they can get in the two deep then they'll be playing some football."
Swepson on what has been installed since the last scrimmage:
"We've installed a lot. We're still installing. We've installed the goal line and the two-minute. We've done a lot of red zone and third down situations. I think the playbook is pretty much done now. After Saturday, we'll start watching the North Carolina film and start adding some specific things."
