ELON, N.C. -- The Elon Phoenix football team closed the book on its preseason camp by holding its third and final scrimmage of the preseason on Friday afternoon.
The defense, strong all camp, had yet another good day as the unit intercepted four passes. Picking off passes were
Brandon Brant,
Adrian McClendon,
Jerrell Armstrong and
Odell Benton.
Starting quarterback
Thomas Wilson tossed touchdown passes of 30 and 44 yards to All-American
Aaron Mellette for the only two TDs of the day. Kicker
Adam Shreiner also drilled a 47-yard field goal.
Freshman running back
Tracey Coppedge also broke off a big run of 51 yards.
Here were coach
Jason Swepson's thoughts following the scrimmage:
"We scripted for success. We had the ones versus the twos on both sides of the ball so we were able to make some plays, work on timing and gets some clean reads and throws. The same thing on defense, we worked two huddles in the first half to give the defense the tempo of what we're going to face against Carolina."
"The defense is still playing at a high level and we're pretty much healthy on that side of the ball. They had a great camp overall and have great leadership. That unit is going to have to carry us with us still being banged up a little bit on offense. Hopefully we got all of the bad bounces out of the way in preseason. Overall, I think the offense did a good job when you consider that every single day it seemed like a different lineup. It's tough to get some continuity when you always have a different offense. We had our starting five offensive linemen all out there today. I'm anxious to take a look at the left tackle and right guard just because
Justin Ward had been playing left tackle all camp. I want to see the film on those two positions. Hopefully we get our tight end and running backs back soon."
"We worked the triple option aspect from day one. Of our 23 practices, we spent a couple of periods on the triple option in about 18 of them. Really in the last week we have thrown in some Carolina stuff. We feel like we got a great jump on both of those. When you have a veteran defense you can work both offenses and they don't miss a beat."
"I'm pleased with the togetherness of this team. It will be interesting now that school is starting. We've felt pretty isolated for the past month. The guys now have to make good decisions off the field when we're out of camp."
