RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University men's tennis swept the weekly CAA awards Tuesday, March 21, for the second time this season with
Petar Tomic earning Player of the Week and the duo of
Neal Port and
Salvador Mijares taking Doubles Team of the Week.
Â
Tomic picked up the honor for the first time this season following his three-set victory over defending conference champion College of Charleston's Vasily Kichigin at No. 3 singles. The senior was one of three Elon players to drop his first set in singles, but Tomic responded nicely to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 and helped the Phoenix to the 5-2 victory over the Cougars. He also paired with
Chris Humphreys at No. 1 doubles and earned a 6-2 win there.
Â
Port and Mijares earned the Doubles Team of the Week honor by extending their winning streak to six in the Phoenix's triumph over Charleston. At No. 3 doubles, the duo finished their match first with a 6-2 win over Rodrigo Encinas and Ramirez Lascurian to help Elon sweep the doubles point.
Â
With the awards, both mark the third of the year in each category.
Felipe Sarrasague won each of the first two Player of the Week awards for Elon while Tomic and Humphreys won back-to-back Doubles Team of the Week honors last month.
Â
Currently on its global experience trip to Hawaii, Elon will battle the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Wednesday, March 22, in a regular season match while on the trip. First serve is set for 3 p.m. local time, 9 p.m. here on the East Coast.
