The current minimum to establish an endowed athletic scholarship is $100,000 (within a five-year pledge period). Many donors choose to honor family members, teammates or a favorite coach with an endowment gift, which serves as a lasting tribute to a loved one or mentor. Once established the endowment will generate five percent of the principal, as set by the Elon Board of Trustees, which will be used to fund the scholarship. All returns from investments of the fund exceeding the University spending policy shall be permanently reinvested into the principal of the endowment.
The athletics department currently has 89 established scholarships totaling $6.6 million, which generates financial support for Elon student-athletes. Outright, memorial and/or testamentary contributions to athletic endowments will also qualify individuals as a member of the Phoenix Club at the appropriate giving level.
