Naming of the Phoenix Announcement to be Delayed

ELON, N.C. -- Thousands of members of the Elon community have spoken, but they just didn’t agree. After an eight-week effort to find a new nickname for the Elon Phoenix mascot, the results of an online vote were less than definitive. Over 14,000 votes were cast in the online effort, and more than 300 different names were suggested. With the spring semester coming to a close, Elon will delay this campaign until next fall to ensure that the winning name has the kind of strong support that would stand the test of time and be adopted by students, alumni and Phoenix athletics fans.

Many other activities will still be taking place this weekend as Elon baseball hosts the Davidson Wildcats for a three-game series. On Sunday, the gates at Latham Park will open at 11:30 a.m. prior to a free concert featuring Elon’s own Rip_chord, Twisted Measure and Sweet Signatures, which will begin at noon. There will be free posters and thunderstix to the first 500 fans in attendance. Be sure to arrive early to enjoy a free cookout with hot dogs, fuel bars and drinks. An inflatable obstacle course will be set up to entertain all youth. The first pitch between the Phoenix and Wildcats will be thrown at 1:30 p.m. The entire timeline is available below so make plans to arrive early to participate in all of the festivities.
