ELON, N.C. – This Saturday, No. 24 Elon and No. 5 Appalachian State – the two-time defending national champion – will meet for the 36th time in a series that began in 1937. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series with the Phoenix 25-9-1, claiming victories in the past 11 meetings.
The two teams have met four times since 1971, all as Southern Conference opponents. In 2003, ASU spoiled Elon’s Homecoming 34-12. In 2004, the Mountaineers dispatched the Phoenix 48-7 in Boone. In 2005, then-No. 6 Appalachian State defeated Elon 52-14 at Rhodes Stadium. Last season, the then-No. 2 Mountaineers turned back the Phoenix 45-21 in Boone.
This year’s meeting marks the first top-25 match-up for the Phoenix since then-No. 10 Hofstra defeated then-No. 21 Elon 21-9 at Burlington Memorial Stadium on Oct. 23, 1999.
