Elon Falls in Road Contest at Charlotte

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
The Elon University volleyball team fell in three sets on Tuesday night in Charlotte, as the Charlotte 49ers upended the Phoenix 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 21-25) at Halton Arena.

Elon drops to 7-5 this season with the loss, while the 49ers improve to 8-3 with the victory.

“Charlotte did a great job of serving and blocking tonight,” said Elon head coach Mary Tendler. “It made it difficult for us to execute our offense.”

Senior Sarah Schermerhorn had an impressive night for the Phoenix in the loss, tallying a team-best 11 kills and hitting .429. Junior Caroline Lemke finished with seven kills, while senior Lauren Copenhagen registered a team-best 13 digs.

Charlotte’s Bianca Rose led all players with 15 kills and 14 digs to pace the 49ers.

Despite falling behind, 8-0, in the opening set, the Phoenix battled back to knot the game at 16-all, as junior setter Megan McMahon found junior Traci Stewart in the front of the net for the kill to bring Elon back.

But Elon's momentum would be short-lived, as the 49ers went on a 9-4 run to hand the Phoenix a 25-20 setback.

The 49ers would carry the momentum into the second set, as Charlotte never trailed and would go ahead by as many as 11 points, eventually winning the set, 28-18.

Elon rallied in an attempt to cut Charlotte’s lead in half in the third set, as the Phoenix took a two-point advantage, 12-10, about mid-way through the set on a Schermerhorn kill from McMahon.

But like the previous two sets, the 49ers would eventually take the lead and pull away down the stretch, as Charlotte claimed a 25-21 win to secure the victory over the Phoenix.

Elon now treks to Wilmington for the UNC Wilmington Hilton Garden Inn Beach Bash on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18. The Phoenix opens up play on Friday versus Campbell at 4:30 p.m. before taking on host Wilmington and North Carolina State on Saturday.
