Phoenix Falls on Road at Furman

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. – After picking up its first SoCon road win of the season last night, the Elon volleyball team was not able to keep the winning streak alive, falling 3-0 (18-25, 18-25, 21-25) at Furman. With the win, the Paladins improve to 15-7 (8-2 SoCon), while the Phoenix drops to 16-10 (4-6 SoCon).

“Our defense played good enough to win the match tonight,” said Elon head coach Mary Tendler. “I felt like offensively we tried to do too much, which created a lot of unforced errors. We will need to clean that up for next weekend.”

Senior Caroline Lemke led the Phoenix with nine kills, while freshmen Kris Harris and Danielle Smith each recorded eight kills. Lemke and Harris both finished with four blocks to help Elon out block Furman, 9-8.

In the first set, two kills by D. Smith, one by Lemke and a block by D. Smith and Harris helped Elon to a 5-3 lead early. With the score tied at 13-all, the Paladins managed an 8-2 run to go up 21-15. After a kill from freshman Chanelle Smith pulled the Phoenix within five, 21-16, Furman scored four of the final six points to win the first set, 25-18.

With the scored tied at nine-all at the beginning of the second set, a kill by Lemke and an ace by C. Smith put the Phoenix up by two, 11-9. Elon held a one-point advantage, 12-11, before Furman scored four unanswered to take a three-point lead, 15-12, forcing Elon to call a timeout. Out of the break, the Phoenix scored off a kill by Harris to cut the deficit to two, 15-13. However, the Paladins continued on a 10-3 run for its second straight 25-18 set victory.

The third set started in favor of the maroon and gold, 8-5 off two kills by Lemke, one by junior Carly Ledbetter and a block by Lemke and senior Megan McMahon. With Elon up by two, 9-7, Furman scored five straight to tie the set and eventually take a three-point lead, 12-9. Down by three, 13-10, Elon earned the next six points off a kill and a block by Harris and another block by Harris and senior Traci Stewart to claim a 16-13 advantage. After a kill and a block by Lemke put the Phoenix up by four, 19-15, the Paladins went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead by four, 23-19. Furman would go on to win the set, 25-21, and take the 3-0 match sweep.
