SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today, August 15, its 2010-11 Academic Honor Roll honorees. The annual list included more than 1,900 student-athletes from the 12 member institutions. Elon landed 198 student-athletes on the list, the third most in the conference. The 1,985 students recognized is the most honorees since the inception of the honor roll, surpassing the previous high set a year ago. 

The average GPA of the 1,985 student-athletes for the 2010-11 academic year was 3.45, and forty-four percent of the recognized student-athletes achieved at least a 3.5 grade point average, including 80 students who posted a 4.0. Meghan Braun, James Carroll, Virginia Mayer, Tara McFadden, Jordan Neuhauser, #Katelyn O’Dunne and David Williams# represented Elon on the list all with a 4.0.

Those 871 student-athletes who attained a 3.5 GPA or higher were further honored with the Commissioner’s Medal. Elon had a total of 92 student-athletes receive the Commissioner’s Medal for the 2010-11 year.

Davidson landed a league-high 270 student-athletes on the honor roll. Seven of the twelve schools increased their numbers from the previous year, including Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Elon, Furman, Chattanooga and Wofford. Appalachian State had the second most honorees with 203, followed by Elon (198), Wofford (195) and College of Charleston (177).

Football boasted the most student-athletes on the list with 298, followed by women’s track and field and cross country with 220, women’s soccer with 204 and baseball with 158. All student-athletes are included on the list, which includes all 19 SoCon sponsored sports as well as non-sponsored sports in field hockey, lacrosse, swimming, equestrian, rifle and sailing. League schools who sponsor swimming are members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.

Southern Conference athletic directors established the honor roll prior to the 1988-89 athletic season as a way to recognize the league’s outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
