GREENVILLE, S.C. – Despite outshooting its opponent, 13-9, the No. 25. Elon University men's soccer team suffered its second Southern Conference loss of the year at the hands of No. 22 Furman, 1-0, on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The loss snapped Elon's (10-3-1, 2-2 SoCon) two-match win streak against the Paladins, while Furman (10-1-2, 2-0-2 SoCon) extends its unbeaten streak to 11 games. It was also the first time that the maroon and gold had been shutout since a 1-0 setback to William & Mary on Sept. 20.
"We felt that it was a great game tonight," said Elon head coach
Darren Powell. "Both teams fought very hard and competed to the very last whistle. Credit to Furman for getting the go-ahead goal late in the game as we held them to few shots defensively throughout the match. We couldn't get clean looks on the other end and it's something we'll work on as we prepare for our next match at Duke on Tuesday."
Furman's Bobby Edet scored the match's lone goal at the 82
nd minute after racing down the left side of the field and sent a floater over the head of the keeper for his seventh score of the year. Furman trailed the Phoenix in shots on goal, 8-4, but both teams were tied in corners at 4-all.
Elon had a few chances early in the match to put the first points on the scoreboard.
Charles Howard nearly sent in a shot over the top of the Furman keeper at the 1:27 mark, but it was knocked out of play. FU's Sven Lissek corralled a header shot by
Nathan Diehl seconds later on an Elon corner.
The Paladins almost scored on a couple of frantic plays close to the 37
th minute. Furman's Trevor Haberkorn fired a shot that was blocked by the Elon defense, but the ball fell at he feet of FU's Michael Gandier in the box, but his attempt went wide left and both teams remained scoreless going into the halftime break.
The Phoenix led Furman at the half in shots 10-4 with a 5-1 advantage on frame. Elon also shutout the Paladins in corners during the opening stanza, 4-0.Â
Almost 10 minutes after the start of the second period, Furman had a few opportunities after a breakaway shot by Martin Ontiveros was blocked at the 53:34 mark. Evan De Ycaza nearly snuck a shot into the back left corner of the net near the 54
th minute, but Elon's keeper
Nathan Dean was able to deflect it away.Â
Elon's best chance at a goal in the second half came at the 71
st minute mark as
Matt Wescoe received a cross from
Jason Waterman on the left side of the box and fired a strike, but Lissek, the SoCon Men's Soccer Player of the Month in September, was there again for the save.
Lissek ended the match with eight saves in goal for Furman while playing all 90 minutes. Dean made two stops while also playing every minute between the posts. Waterman, Diehl and Howard led the Phoenix in shots with three apiece.
Elon continues its road trip to Durham, N.C., with a non-conference matchup with Duke on Oct. 22. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
