Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Elon University women's soccer team dropped its first Southern Conference match of the season on Friday, Oct. 4, falling 2-1 to The Citadel at WLI Field in Charleston.

Elon falls to 6-2-3 (1-1-1 SoCon) with the setback, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-5-2 (1-2 SoCon).
"The Citadel was the better team today," said Elon head coach
Chris Neal. "Bob Winch is an excellent coach and they managed the game very well."

The Phoenix ended the match with a 21-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 advantage in the second period, putting eight shots on target. Elon finished with a 4-1 edge in corner kicks as well.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead just minutes prior to intermission following an Andrea Davila score on a cross that deflected off the crossbar in the 44th minute.

Despite trailing at the half, the Phoenix outshot The Citadel, 9-6, and had the match's only corner kick in the first 45 minutes.

Marissa Russo scored the equalizer for the maroon and gold in the 49th minute after knocking in a bouncing ball in front of the goal on an
Olivia Mackey corner kick. Russo finished the match with three total shots, all of which were on frame.

But the Bulldogs responded seven minutes later after Lea Raedle chipped a ball into an open net in the 56th minute to give The Citadel a 2-1 edge.

Elon took eight more shots following The Citadel's go-ahead score, putting two on target, but could not score the game-tying goal.

Kimmie Krauss and
Jennifer McGorty each tallied three.

The Phoenix returns to action on Sunday at Francis Marion. Kick is scheduled for 2 p.m.
