Elon Suffers Loss at JMU on Overtime PK

HARRISONBURG, Va. – A defensive battle between the Elon women's soccer team and James Madison ended on a penalty kick in the 95th minute of overtime on Sunday, Oct. 26, as the Phoenix fell, 1-0, in its season finale.

After the Dukes were awarded a PK following an Elon foul inside the box, JMU's Sam Lofton buried the kick behind Phoenix keeper Kate Murphy for the game-winning goal. On the play, Murphy was running out to save a shot by Allie Bunner, who attempted to chip a shot to the right near the top of the box. Murphy's foot found its way under Bunner on a trip, as the Dukes were awarded the PK.

Elon finishes the season with 5-12 mark, including a 1-8 record in its inaugural season in the Colonial Athletic Association. JMU improves to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in CAA action to earn the No. 2 overall seed in the league tournament. With a win over Drexel today, Northeastern wins the CAA regular season title with a 7-1-1 mark in conference play. Both the Huskies and Dukes earn first-round byes in the CAA Women's Soccer Championship. Elon finds itself on the outside looking in, as only the top-six teams qualify for league tournament.

The Phoenix held its own defensively against the high-powered Dukes for the majority of the game. Murphy, who played the second half and OT, finished with seven saves in just 49 minutes. Rookie Hanna Macaulay earned the start between the posts for Elon and registered two first half saves.

The Dukes ended the match with a 10-1 edge in shots on target, while the Phoenix finished with a 4-3 advantage in corners. All four of Elon's corners occurred in the second period, but the Phoenix could not manage a goal from the set piece.

Mel Insley took Elon's lone shot on target in the match, a free kick that was saved by JMU keeper Ellen Forrest in the 59th minute. Insley was one of six Phoenix players to play the entire match.

Murphy played her final match in a Phoenix uniform today along with classmates Marissa Russo, Raychel Diver, Caroline O'Dee, Kim Gardner and Bethany Houpt.
