MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In its first Colonial Athletic Association road match, the Elon University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to College of Charleston on Friday, Oct. 3, at Patriots Point.
Elon (4-7, 0-3 CAA) could not capitalize in several opportunities to score throughout the match, while CofC (5-7, 1-2 CAA) managed to make the most of its chances to secure its first win in league play. The Phoenix ended the match with a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks and equaled the Cougars with six shots on goal.
"Credit Charleston on the win tonight, they made the most of their chances," said Elon head coach
Chris Neal. "We had several dangerous opportunities tonight and the ball just didn't bounce our way."
Elon controlled the pace of play in the first period, nearly taking an early advantage on a pair of shots on frame by
Samantha Burch and
Alissa Pantuosco. However, it was the Cougars who struck first, as Tracey Webster blasted a shot from near the top of the box into the top right corner of the goal above a leaping
Kate Murphy for an early CofC lead. Two minutes later, Mary Kate Bowers put CofC up 2-0 after dribbling laterally into the box from the right corner and hitting a left-footed shot into the Elon net.
Bowers struck again in the 83rd minute for her second goal of the night to put the Phoenix down, 3-0, after she scored near the left corner of the box from 18 yards out.
Susannah Anderson scored her first collegiate goal one minute after Bowers knocked in her second score of the match, as the rookie headed in a high volley from
Marissa Russo to make it a 3-1 game. Anderson had another chance to score on a set piece in the 88th minute on a header, but CofC keeper Lauren Killian was there for the save.
Elon concludes its two-match road swing on Sunday at 2 p.m. against UNC Wilmington.
