ELON, N.C. – As Elon embarks upon its membership in the Colonial Athletic Association and CAA Football, we will be posting a series of profiles on all of the CAA's current members – both full and associate – in sports in which Elon competes. These profiles will be posted each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through August 8. 

Today's profile is of all-sports member University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Founded in 1947 as Wilmington College, The University of North Carolina Wilmington is the state's coastal university that is dedicated to learning through the integration of teaching and mentoring with research and service. UNCW is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

UNCW continues to be recognized as one of the premier institutions in the nation. The 2012 U.S.News & World Report "America's Best Colleges" guidebook ranked UNCW fourth among public regional undergraduate universities in the South. It marked the 14th year for UNCW in the top-10 and the publication placed UNCW third on its list of "up and coming" universities.

Over the past decade, more than 40 campus buildings have been constructed or renovated. The School of Nursing's home, McNeill Hall, opened in August 2010, and a teaching laboratory building for the Department of Psychology and an addition to the Student Recreation Center were completed in 2013.

UNCW's enrollment eclipsed the 14,000-student mark in 2013 as the growing coastal university continued to become a popular destination school for high school and transfer students.

UNCW sponsors 19 NCAA Division I sports programs.
