ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women's soccer team closed its preseason schedule with a 5-0 decision over Catawba on Sunday night, Aug. 17, at Rudd Field.
The Phoenix took an early 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute of the match after
Samantha Burch drew a foul in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Burch knocked her PK in the back of the net to give her squad an early lead.
Elon went ahead 2-0 in the 23rd minute following a
Kathryn Black goal near the right post of a great pass from rookie
Grace Bennett.
Elon held a 10-2 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner after 45 minutes of action.
The Phoenix scored three additional second-half goals by
Sydney Schilling (78'),
Kim Gardner (82') and
Marissa Russo (85') to go up 5-0.
Elon opens the regular season on Friday night, Aug. 22, against Jacksonville State. Kick is slated for 7 p.m. at Rudd Field.
