Henson's Late Goal Pushes Elon Past Coastal Carolina

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sarah Henson found an opportune time to score her first career goal, as the sophomore's strike in the 85th minute pushed the Elon University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Friday, Sept. 12.

With the clock ticking away in regulation, Samantha Burch struck a ball on the end line that slipped past Coastal Carolina goalie Becca Austin and near the foot of Henson, who put the ball in the back of the net for the goal. The maroon and gold defense held strong for the final five minutes to secure the victory.

With the win in the first match of the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational, Elon improves to 2-4 on the year.

"I'm proud of the great team effort everyone put in today," said Elon head coach Chris Neal. "Sam Burch was exceptional for us today and give a lot of credit to Sarah Henson on a great finish on the goal."

Kate Murphy earned the win for Elon, playing the match's final 45 minutes between the posts. Sydney Branson played the first half and ended the day with two saves, which also happened to be Coastal Carolina's only two shots on frame.

Elon ended the match with a 9-7 advantage in shots (3-2 edge in shots on goal) and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Elon created ample scoring chances on corner kicks in the second period, tallying a total of six and holding CCU to one, but could not get a ball in the back of the net until late in the second half on Henson's goal. Taylor Glenn had Elon's other two shots on target in the victory.

The Phoenix returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 14, at noon against Francis Marion.
