ELON, N.C. – Elon University head women's soccer coach
Chris Neal earned his 100th career victory on Friday night, Sept. 19, as the Phoenix topped Gardner-Webb, 2-0.
Goals by
Taylor Glenn (42') and
Sydney Schilling (72') paved the way for Elon (4-4), who earned its third straight victory with tonight's result.
Sydney Branson and
Kate Murphy combined for the shutout for the Phoenix in goal, as the Phoenix defense stifled the Bulldogs for all 90 minutes.
"A win always feels great no matter what number it is," Neal said. "Credit to Gardner-Webb, they're a very well-coached and organized team. Tonight was a total team win and a real special moment for Taylor Glenn, who showed a lot of bravery on her header."
Just prior to intermission, Glenn put the Phoenix up 1-0 after the junior headed in a great corner kick near the right post from Bethany Houpt to give Elon the advantage. The goal marks Glenn's first of the season.
Elon controlled possession for the majority of the opening stanza, tallying a total of seven corners to GWU's one.
The Phoenix took a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute after Schilling knocked in a great cross from Mel Insley to give the maroon and gold late insurance.
Elon's defense held on from that point forward, earning the squad's third shutout of the year.
The Phoenix ended the match with a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 3-2 edge in shots on frame.
Elon begins play in the Colonial Athletic Association a week from today when it welcomes Hofstra to Rudd Field for a 7 p.m. kick. Watch the game live on Phoenix All-Access.
