WILMINGTON, N.C. â Behind a pair of goals from senior

Jaiden Fortune, the Elon University men's soccer team earned its third straight shutout win with a 2-0 victory over Campbell in the opening match of the Courtyard at Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic on Friday, Sept. 4, at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Phoenix improved its record to 3-0 while the Camels fell to 0-2. It is the first time that Elon is 3-0 to start the season since 2006. It is also the first time that the maroon and gold has opened the year with three consecutive clean sheets since 2005.
"I'm obviously very pleased with the result today," said Phoenix head coach
Chris Little. "I thought Campbell was very organized with its attack early on, but I was very pleased with our performance in the second half. I'm also delighted that we were able to earn another clean sheet as well."
The RundownThe Camels were on the attack early on in the match with seven shots (with two on goal) in the first 17 minutes before Elon attempted its first shot. The Phoenix was outshot 8-5 in the opening stanza, but both teams remained scoreless going into the half.
The Phoenix would eventually break through 10 minutes after the start of the second session. Da Silva found the back of the net for his second score of the season off a rebound on a shot by
Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler inside the six-yard box. The play gave Elon a 1-0 lead.
Elon increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 71
st minute when Fortune connected on his first career goal. The rookie finished a long run with a blast to far post from about 25 yards. The Phoenix defense held Campbell to only one shot the remainder of the match to pull out with the 2-0 victory.
Match Notes- Campbell ended the match with a 13-9 advantage in shots, but both teams were tied in shots on goal with five.
- The Phoenix held the Camels to only one corner kick in the match while Elon had seven overall.
- Keeper Matthew Jegier posted his third straight shutout in his third-ever collegiate start. The Charlotte, N.C., native also had a season-high five saves in the match.
- The assist by Vandermaas-Peeler was his team-leading the second of the year.Â
- Da Silva's goal was second of the season for the senior from São Sebastião do Caí, Brazil, tying him with Eduardo Alvarez for the team-lead.
- Elon improves to 10-9-1 all-time against Campbell and has won two straight over the Camels.
- The Phoenix is also now 4-1 at the Courtyard at Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic. Elon also won the UNCW hosted tournament championship in 2013.
