ATHENS, GA. – The Elon University softball team could not carry its momentum from its season opener as the Phoenix fell at No. 12 Georgia, 9-0, by a way of run-rule in its second game at the UGA Red and Black Showcase on Friday, Feb. 12, at Jack Turner Stadium.
Kara Shutt had the lone hit in the contest for the Phoenix (1-1) with her double in the top of the first. Senior
Kayla Caruso (0-1) was credited with the loss after throwing 3.0 innings with five hits and six earned runs allowed.
The Rundown: The Bulldogs struck first with a two-RBI single up the middle by Alyssa DiCarlo in the bottom of the opening inning. Georgia had a runner advance to third with two outs in the frame before Elon escaped on a fielder's choice.
Two more runs came across the plate in the bottom of the second. Sydni and Cortni Emanuel scored after a throwing miscue from the Phoenix in an attempt to throw out a runner at second. The ball sailed over the base and into the outfield allowing both players to score easily.
Back-to-back RBI by the Bulldogs' Katie Browne and Kaylee Puailoa put the Phoenix in a 6-0 disadvantage in bottom of the third. A three-run homer by Tina Iosefa in the bottom of the fourth set the final score of 9-0.
On DeckElon returns for its final day at the Red and Black Showcase tomorrow, Feb. 13, beginning with a rematch versus Winthrop at 10 a.m.
