Softball Defeats George Washington in Nail Biter, 3-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. Callie Horn's two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth aided the Elon University softball team to a close 3-2 victory over George Washington on Friday evening, March 18, on the Phoenix's final day at the UNCG Blue and Gold Challenge.

Elon (14-12) went 1-1 at the tournament after joining the field late this week and won for the second straight year over the Colonials (9-10). The Phoenix had six hits in the contest overall with six different members each recording a base hit.

Elise Walton (6-1) had the complete game win in the circle after going 7.0 innings and gave up five hits and two runs, both unearned, and had five strikeouts.

The Rundown: George Washington plated the first run of the game off a bunt single in the top of the second. That run gave Elon a 1-0 deficit going to the bottom half of the frame.

The Phoenix responded with a run back in the home half on a RBI double from Kristin Hoover to right center. The run scored Carey Million, who reached earlier in the inning on a single to the pitcher, to tie the game at 1-1.

The Colonials retook the lead in the top of the fourth. GWU had a runner reach on a fielding error by the third baseman and advanced to third after a two-out bunt single. She later stole home to give the Colonials a 2-1 advantage.

Elon answered and took advantage in the bottom of the fourth.  Ashtyn Foddrell opened with a single through the left side before being replaced on the bases by Emily Cameron. She moved to second on and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt by Million and an error on the third baseman. Million was also safe on the play at and gave the Phoenix runners at the corners. Horn then drove a single to left to plate both runners and gave Elon the 3-2 lead.

That set the final score as Elon held on for the 3-2 win.

Notes of Interest: Emily Roper saw her reached base streak end at 14 games tonight while Kara Shutt had her hitting streak stopped at nine games…Shutt however extended her reached base streak to 10 games with a walk in the contest.
