ELON, N.C. – Bowling Green scored six runs over the final three innings to snap the Elon University baseball team's four-game winning streak by a 6-2 margin in the second game of the Elon Invitational at Latham Park on Friday, March 4.
For Elon (4-6),
Tyler McVicar homered, while
Kyle Jackson doubled twice and
Liam O'Regan went 2-for-3.
Bowling Green (2-5) got two hits apiece from Kory Brown and Derek Drewes. Nick Glanzman drove in a pair of runs for the Falcons.
Matt Harris (1-1) pitched 6.2 innings, but was charged with three runs on six hits to take the loss.
The win was awarded to Devin Daugherty (1-1) who surrendered one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief work. Tony Landi threw the final 1.2 innings for his first save of the year.
How It Happened: Elon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the last of the third when
Tyler McVicar launched his first home run of the year off the batter's eye in center.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh when Bowling Green struck for a trio of runs. With one out, a pair of walks sandwiched around a single loaded the bases for the Falcons. Brown then slapped a slow ground ball to short that allowed Elon to only record an out at second as a run scored to tie the game. After a stolen base, Glanzman delivered a single to left that put the Falcons in front as a pair of runs scored to make it a 3-1 contest.
Bowling Green would add one in the eighth before Elon cut the deficit to 4-2 on a
CJ Young ground out. The Falcons tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Notes: Nick Zammarelli went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to a career-long 16 games ... The Phoenix was just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position ... Elon stranded 13 base runners.
On Deck: Elon will be right back in action at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 5, against Stony Brook.
