Elon Evens Series With Dukes

HARRISONBURG, VA. – A six-run sixth inning propelled the Elon University baseball team to a 9-2 victory over the James Madison Dukes on Saturday afternoon as the Phoenix evened up the series at a game apiece.

Nick Zammarelli drove in a pair and scored a run with a 3-for-5 performance. Zammarelli had one double, giving him 21 on the year to tie for second on Elon's single-season chart. Liam O'Regan also doubled and drove in two for Elon (21-23, 11-8 Colonial Athletic Association) as he was 2-for-4 on the day.

Chad Carroll had three of JMU's (18-25, 8-9) nine hits.

The win went to Jordan Barrett (3-3) who allowed one run on seven hits in 7.0 innings. Barrett struck out three.

Colton Harlow (2-6) took the loss after being tagged for eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in 5.1 innings.

How It Happened: Elon grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second when Kyle Jackson tripled home one and then scored on Austin Leeney's infield single.

With the Phoenix up 3-1 going to the sixth, the maroon and gold exploded for six to up its advantage to 9-1. Back-to-back one-out doubles from Jackson and Will Nance plated the first run of the inning. Following a walk, Ryne Ogren singled home the fifth Elon run of the game. Zammarelli followed with a two-RBI double before a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs. O'Regan then doubled home two more to give the Phoenix an eight-run cushion.

JMU would score its second run on a ninth-inning balk.

Notes: Zammarelli is just the sixth Elon player to record 20 or more doubles in a season; He is now tied for second with Robert Rodebaugh who hit 21 doubles in 2006... The program record for doubles in a year is 24 which was sent by Grant Rembert in 2004... Zammarelli has six multi-hit outings in the last eight games... JMU was 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

On Deck: Elon and James Madison will play the rubber match of the series at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.
