ELON, N.C. – Finding itself in a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Elon University baseball team put up three runs, including a game-winning two-RBI double from
Liam O'Regan, as the Phoenix defeated the North Carolina A&T Aggies by a 9-6 margin at Latham Park on Wednesday night.
O'Regan's hit was his lone in four at bats in the game. He also scored two runs for Elon (23-23).
Kyle Jackson tripled and doubled while driving in two in a 2-for-4 night at the plate.
Jarrett Norman drove in three of N.C. A&T's runs and went 2-for-4 for the lone multi-hit game for the Aggies (10-38).
Improving to 4-0 on the season was Elon reliever
Danny Crowe. Crowe earned the victory after tossing 2.0 perfect innings and striking out three.
Chris Hall tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his ninth save on the year.
The loss went to Leon Hunter (2-5) who was charged with three runs on three hits in an inning of work.
How It Happened: With the score knotted at six,
Tyler McVicar began the Phoenix eighth with a double inside the third base bag. After
Danny Lynch was hit by a pitch,
CJ Young advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. O'Regan followed and sent the first pitch he saw from Hunter to left for a two-RBI double that gave the Phoenix an 8-6 lead. With two outs and O'Regan on third thanks to a wild pitch,
Kory Shumate's infield single provided one more marker for the maroon and gold.
Elon twice battled back from three-run deficits. The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth only to see the Phoenix score three in the last of the frame, including two on an
Austin Leeney double.
A&T rebuilt a three-run cushion in the fifth, grabbing a 6-3 edge before Elon got one in the bottom of the fifth. The Phoenix would tie it in the sixth on a Lynch single and Jackson being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Notes: Hall moved in to seventh place on the program's career saves chart by picking up the 11th of his career... His nine saves in 2016 are tied for the eighth-most ever in a season for Elon...
Tyler McVicar has reached base safely in 18 consecutive games, while three other players have reached safely in at least 12 straight games –
Nick Zammarelli (16),
Ryne Ogren (15) and O'Regan (12)...
Derek Pike picked off a runner in the fifth inning, giving the Phoenix 16 pickoffs on the year.
On Deck: Elon will wrap up CAA play with a three-game series at Delaware this weekend. The set will open with a 3 p.m. contest on Friday, May 6.
