NEWARK, Del. – The Elon University baseball team allowed six runs in the sixth inning as the Delaware Blue Hens rallied to defeat the Phoenix 16-12 in the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Hannah Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
For Elon (24-25, 13-10 CAA),
Tyler McVicar matched personal-bests with seven RBI and two home runs as he went 3-for-3 and reach base six times.
Kory Shumate (2-for-5) and
Brett Guba (2-for-5) also homered for the maroon and gold.
Delaware (29-19, 7-11 CAA) got three RBI apiece from Kyle Baker (2-for-4), Jeremy Ake (3-for-5) and Doug Trimble (2-for-5).
Robbie Welhaf (0-2) took the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning.
Colman Vila (2-1) earned the win. He allowed two runs on three hits in 3.0 innings.
How It Happened: The Phoenix jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on McVicar's two-RBI double and a
CJ Young sacrifice fly. Elon extended its lead to 8-1 by plating five runs in the top of the second. Guba's two-run home run drove home Shumate to start the scoring. With one out and runners on the corners, McVicar unloaded on a 1-2 pitch, sending the ball deep over the wall in left-center.
With the Phoenix leading 10-6 heading to the last of the sixth, the Blue Hens began their rally. An infield single followed by a Baker double cut it to 10-7. Two batters later, Jordan Glover doubled home another. Delaware cut the deficit to one on a wild pitch before Ake's one-out single tied it up at 10. After a walk, Trimble doubled home two to give the Blue Hens a 12-10 advantage.
Elon would tie it back up in the top of the seventh when McVicar crushed a two-run shot to center only to see Delaware get four in the bottom half. The go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch.
Notes: McVicar has now reached base safely in 21 consecutive contests... McVicar recorded his second multi-homer game of the year and third of his career... Elon finished its CAA campaign with 13 wins for the second consecutive season.
