Hall of Fame Reflection: Tim Clark

Elon University recently announced its newest additions to be inducted into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame for 2016. The four-person class includes men's golfer Tim Clark '92, men's cross country standout Brian Keller '97, former football player Chad Nkang '07 and women's soccer star Kam Radford '96, who will all be inducted in a ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 17.

To lead up to the induction ceremony, elonphoenix.com will provide a feature each week over each of the honorees. Today's feature is over Clark, the former men's golfer standout who earned four letters between 1989-92. He began his collegiate career by capturing all-conference honors in 1989 before garnering all-district accolades as a sophomore in the 1990 season. As a junior, Clark was named all-conference and all-district as well as the district player of the year and an all-American. Following his 1992 senior season he picked up all-conference and all-district accolades yet again. Clark was also the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year, conference medalist and SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1992. His individual play helped the maroon and gold capture four conference crowns and three district titles (1990-92). The program finished the year ranked in the top-eight nationally in all four seasons that Clark was a member of the squad – eighth in both 1989 and 1990, third in 1991 and seventh in 1992.

What was your first reaction when you heard you were being inducted into the Elon Athletics Hall of Fame?
"I got the call at work. I was so surprised and honored. I called my wife to share my good news. Of course, she immediately posted it on Facebook and Twitter and started the avalanche of calls and texts from friends and old teammates. I felt proud that my work ethic paid off and that I was fortunate to play with such an awesome group of guys and for Coach Bill Morningstar."

What has been the feedback about the recent news from former teammates, coaches, staff, etc.?
"It was great to hear from old friends and teammates. It has also opened doors to meeting new people. Everyone, even people I don't know, congratulates me. I feel humbled and honored and happy to have shared such great moments with so many wonderful people."

What made you choose to play and attend Elon?
"The biggest reason I chose Elon was the opportunity to play for Coach Bill Morningstar. He made me feel like he really wanted me to play here and that made it feel like the right place to be."

What is one of your favorite memories as a student-athlete playing at Elon, both on and off the field?12161
"My favorite memories on the course were coming down the 18th fairway with the guys from my team telling what they had shot and knowing we were going to win. Off the course, the best part was traveling. I got to see so many places I would never have otherwise seen."

How did being a student-athlete at Elon help prepare you for life after college?
"My life as a student-athlete at Elon helped me develop my work ethic. As a college golfer, most of our tournaments were during the week so we missed classes somewhat regularly. It took a great deal of effort to keep up with my classwork and be competitive on the course at the same time."

What have you been doing since graduating from Elon?
"After graduating from Elon, I worked at Stoney Creek Golf Course for my good friend, Deva Reece, for several years. I went into the printing business in 1998 and now Deva and I are partners in a local printing company."

What is the one thing that you miss about being a student-athlete at Elon?
"I miss knowing that all I have to do is wake up, go to class and then play golf."

How much do you keep up with your former teammates and coaches? How much do you follow the current team?
"I see Coach Morningstar on a semi-regular basis. I'm still quite close with two former teammates, Jim Arnold and Richie Burke."

If you could describe your time at Elon in one word what would it be?
"Fulfilling"

What Others are Saying
Jim Arnold '94, former Elon teammate
"No one would out work Tim in practice. Not only did that prepare him for the next tournament, it set a great example for other players to put forth a similar effort. Additionally, Tim is one of the greatest competitors I've ever known."
