ELON, N.C. – Kicking off an exciting month of November at Elon University, the Harlem Globetrotters entertained an energetic crowd Thursday night, Nov. 1, inside Schar Center. The outing is the first of multiple cornerstone events inside Schar Center over the course of the first nine days of November.
"Bringing the Harlem Globetrotters to Schar Center is something our department has been working on for months, and we're thrilled with how the night progressed for our fans," said Elon Director of Athletics
Dave Blank. "To kick off November with an event that brings so many smiles, we're excited to continue bringing great events in the coming days with the homecoming concert this weekend and our men's and women's basketball programs opening their seasons next week against UNC in this building. It was truly a memorable night for so many fans of all ages and we're grateful to the Harlem Globetrotters for making it happen."
In front of a crowd of 3,027, the Globetrotters brought their highly anticipated, one-of-a-kind show to Schar Center to showcase the largest facility at Elon University to the Triad area. WFMY News 2 "Good Morning Show" anchor and reporter Maddie Gardner served as the guest Globetrotter for the night. In the role, Gardner played in the first half while the team showed her a few tricks and capped her appearance with a layup.
"I really didn't know what to expect going into this," Gardner said. "I didn't play basketball growing up, so I just went into it with the mindset of just to have fun, but I was so excited and honored to be chosen by the Globetrotters to be here and to play in this brand new Schar Center at Elon University. My performance on the court was less than stellar but I had a lot of fun and I think everyone in the building did too. They've been around for a long time, they have a great message they promote and it was a lot of fun to be here."
Entertaining crowds around the world with one-of-a-kind family entertainment, Amy Faucette was thrilled to have the chance to see the show make its first Alamance County appearance in its 92-year history.
"This was a spectacular event seeing the Harlem Globetrotters for the first time", Faucette said. "As an Elon University alum, it was even more amazing to bring my three kids to see the show. This building is gorgeous and it's going to continue to bring more of the community together to see more events like this."
In the coming days, Schar Center will host Jesse McCartney, Sean Kingston and Quinn XCII for the Student Union Board Homecoming Concert on Saturday, Nov. 3, after the sixth-ranked Elon football team hosts Towson earlier in the day at 1:30 p.m.
Next week, Schar Center will host its first regular-season basketball games with Elon women's basketball welcoming North Carolina on Tuesday night, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. Tickets to the game start at just $10 and are on sale through the Elon Ticket Office box office Schar Center's Gate A, on elonphoenix.com/tickets or by calling (336) 278-6750.
To close this exciting stretch, the Elon men's basketball program will host the nationally-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday night, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in front of what is expected to be a sold out crowd.
