Elon Completes Series Sweep of Hartford

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Hartford Hawks by claiming a 2-1 victory at Latham Park on Sunday, April 22. The win moves Elon's winning streak to eight games.

Ryan Conroy (2-3) was the winning pitcher for Elon (25-16). He allowed one run on two hits in 6.0 innings. Jared Wetherbee struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save.

Four different Elon players all had one hit apiece – Zach Evers (1-for-3), Hayden Platt (1-for-3), Josh Broughton (1-for-3, run) and Tyler Stanley (1-for-3, run, RBI).

For Hartford (14-23), starter Nathan Florence (1-5) suffered the loss after giving up two runs on four hits in 7.2 innings.

The Hawks had just three hits on the day.

How It Happened: Elon scored both of its runs in the third inning. Broughton led off with a single to left and stole second before scoring on Stanley's single through the left side. On the throw home, Stanley took second. He then stole third and jogged home on a Garrett Stonehouse sacrifice fly.

Conroy retired the first 12 hitters of the game before issuing a leadoff walk in the fifth. A double from TJ Ward followed to put two in scoring position for the Hawks. After a shallow fly ball to left accounted for the first out, a Zachary Ardito ground out to short plated a run and left the tying run on third. Drew Holtgrieve then bounced a slow chopper over the pitcher's mound that Ryne Ogren fielded and threw on the run to first for the final out.

Notes: Elon allowed just three runs in the three-game sweep, the second time this year that the Phoenix has allowed three or fewer runs in a weekend set... Evers saw his streak of six straight multi-hit games come to a close... Wetherbee's four saves rank in a tie for the second-most by a freshman in the program's Division I tenure.

On Deck: Elon will close out its 10-game homestand on Tuesday, April 24, with a 6 p.m. first pitch against High Point. Latham Park gates will open at 5 p.m.
