Elon Drops First Tournament Game to UNCW

HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the second time this year, the Elon University baseball team carried an eight-game winning streak into a matchup with the UNCW Seahawks. For the second time, the Seahawks snapped that streak as fourth-seeded UNCW defeated the second-seeded Phoenix by an 11-3 margin in CAA Tournament action on Friday, May 25.

Elon now stands at 36-22 on the year, while UNCW moved to 36-20.

George Kirby (10-3) took the loss after being charged with five runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings of work.

At the plate, Elon saw Ty Adcock go 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

Picking up the win was Austin Easter (4-2) who allowed two runs (one earned) in an inning of work. Austin Warren earned his first save after going the final 4.1 scoreless innings and giving up four hits.

UNCW's offense was led by Greg Jones who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI, while Ryan Jeffers doubled and drove in three during a 2-for-4 day.

How It Happened: UNCW struck first, scoring one on a two-out single from Cole Weiss in the last of the third before Elon tied it up in the top of the fourth. With two down, Cam Devanney was hit by a pitch and raced around to score on Adcock's double off the wall in left-center.

The Seahawks reclaimed the lead by scoring four runs in the fourth inning, the final three with two outs. A Jackson Meadows sacrifice fly broke the tie before three straight RBI hits with two down came from Mason Berne, Jones and Kep Brown.

The Phoenix was able to cut into the lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, a Garrett Stonehouse single was followed by a Ryne Ogren double to put a pair in scoring position. Stonehouse scored to make it 5-2 on a Joe Satterfield ground out. James Venuto followed with a grounder to first that was misplayed, allowing him to reach safely. A throw attempt on the play was wild, allowing Ogren to score to cut Elon's deficit to 5-3 midway through the game.

UNCW pulled away in the last of the sixth as the Seahawks pushed across five in the inning. During the frame, UNCW got RBI hits from Noah Bridges, Meadows, Jeffers and Jones to grab an 11-3 advantage.

Notes: The Phoenix and Seahawks have now split four meetings this season... Elon issued a season-high nine walks and gave up a season-high 17 hits... Satterfield saw his hitting streak end at a career-best 10 games.

On Deck: The loss will force Elon to play again on Friday night. The Phoenix will take on the winner of top-seeded Northeastern and fifth-seeded Delaware at approximately 7 p.m.
