Elon’s Home Opener Ends in Scoreless Draw

ELON, N.C. – Despite a plethora of chances, Elon University women's soccer's match against Triad rival UNCG ended in a scoreless 0-0 draw after two overtime periods on Sunday night, Aug. 19, at Rudd Field.
 
The Phoenix outshot the Spartans 22-11 in the match and had four chances hit the crossbar or the post during the 110 minutes of action. Both teams put seven shots on frame during the match.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
Elon's first chance to hit off the woodwork came from Tori Baliatico, who hit the post in the seventh minute. Taylor Paradoski was the second Phoenix to hit the post in the half as her attempt was denied in the 39th minute.
 
Right before the first half finished, Hannah Doherty attempted an effort from range and hit the crossbar in the 42nd, denying the Phoenix a chance to take the lead into the half. Elon outshot the Spartans 8-3 in the first 45 minutes.
 
The Phoenix put together multiple chances in the second half, outshooting UNCG 10-4 in the period, but couldn't find the back of the end. Doherty hit the woodwork for the second time in the match in the 66th minute, attempting a shot from 35 yards out.
 
In the first overtime period, UNCG created two chances, but the first missed wide and Valentina Estrada saved the second. Estrada would then come up with a huge double save at the beginning of the second overtime in the 101st minute. Elon had four more attempts in the final nine minutes, including three shots that were blocked. The match would finish as a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes.
 
UP NEXT
The Phoenix begins a three-match road swing on Thursday, Aug. 23, with a trip to Western Carolina. The match kicks off at 7 p.m.
