Men's Soccer Earns 2-0 Road Win at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Elon University men's soccer team came away with a 2-0 road win over Liberty to close out its short two-game road swing on Saturday evening, Oct. 12, at Osborne Stadium.

The Phoenix improved to 4-7-1 on the season with the nonconference win. The Flames fell to 4-9 in 2019.

The Rundown
Early pressure by the Phoenix led to Elon's first goal of the match. The Flames tried to play the ball up field, but pressure by Jalen Weatherspoon on the defender led to an errant pass back to Liberty's goal in which the keeper misplayed leading to an own goal in the sixth minute.

The Flames tried to respond with the equalizer in the 17th minute. Liberty's Musa Morris fired a shot that was stopped by the Phoenix's Peter Wentzel in goal.

Elon doubled its lead in the 30th minute. The Phoenix's Valdimar Jonsson played the ball near the top right corner of the box off a deflection and fired inside the left post for his third score of the year. That put Elon up 2-0 going in the break.

Liberty looked to get on the board for the majority of the second half, controlling possession for most of the second stanza. The Flames had a 5-3 shot advantage in the second period, but their only shot on goal came inside the 85th minute on a Rafael Castro attempt, but Wentzel was able to make the easy save.

The Phoenix ended with the 2-0 win despite being outshot by the Flames, 8-6, overall. The win also snapped Elon's three-match losing streak.

Wentzel posted the first shutout of his career while making two saves in goal and playing all 90 minutes. Jonsson led the Phoenix with two shots.
