Seahawks Snap Elon's Win Streak With 3-1 Final

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Elon University volleyball's three-match win streak came to a halt on Sunday, Oct. 6 as UNCW handed the maroon and gold its first CAA loss with a 3-1 final inside Hanover Hall.

"UNC-Wilmington played great right from the start today, especially on defense," said head coach Mary Tendler. "We got a lot of offensive opportunities, but couldn't score consistently enough to get the win. We look forward to starting our upcoming home stand in Schar Center on Thursday night."

The loss drops the Phoenix to 8-9 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

THE RUNDOWN

The Seahawks (11-6, 1-3) used a 7-1 run early in the opening set to take a 10-3 lead. Haylie Clark assisted Leah Daniel and UNCW committed a pair of errors to help Elon close the gap at 20-16, but  the Phoenix was unable to get any closer. The hosts scored three-straight points to put away the set, 25-17. Elon hung around for most of Set Two, but the Seahawks were able to distance themselves down the stretch. With the score even at 16-16, UNCW took off with a 9-1 swing for another 25-17 decision and a 2-0 match lead.

Elon came out ahead with a 6-2 edge in the third set, but was unable to hold on for long. UNCW wrestled back control with six unanswered. Down 16-12 later in the set, four consecutive attack errors helped the maroon and gold pull even. Following three more UNCW errors, Kodi Garcia set up Daniel for a score as the Phoenix went up 21-18. After a Seahawk kill, the teams traded 3-0 runs and UNCW committed another attack error as Elon earned the set point, 25-22.

Midway through Set Four, a pair of Daniel kills highlighted a 3-0 run by the Phoenix and sent the home team back to its bench with a narrow 10-9 lead. The break proved beneficial for UNCW, who went off for seven straight points. The stretch was too much for Elon to overcome, and the Seahawks captured their first league victory with a 25-18 result.
