Elon Football Summer Internship Series: Torrence Williams

ELON, N.C.- Continuing our series on internships our football players participated in this summer, we focus on defensive end Torrence Williams, who had an internship just over three miles away from campus at his alma mater, Williams High School, in the athletic department. Because he is a frequent visitor at Williams, he still keeps in touch with his former coaches, which ultimately led to his internship opportunity.

Williams’ main responsibility at Williams was to ensure that the athletic facilities were properly maintained.

“Depending on the day, I was handed the task of maintenance around the school, including athletic areas, athletic director county meetings, inventory and specific sport meetings.”

Even being in a global pandemic, Williams had the opportunity to work with new and former coaches while ensuring the safety of the coaches, administration, and the student-athletes. However, he also had to make sure that he didn’t contract the virus.

“The only challenge was ensuring good work while also being very cautious of contacting or spreading the coronavirus, but my favorite part of the internship was being able to connect with former coaches and new coaches in efforts to ensure safe and good quality athletics for students in my hometown.”

Williams then discussed how his time at Elon helped him succeed during his internship.

“My experience at Elon has been full of obstacles and distractions. I have then been forced to try a lot harder and always give 110% to whatever I commit to. This mindset is what allowed me to work effectively and efficiently throughout my internship no matter the circumstances at hand.”

However, Williams discussed how he developed his time management skills during the summer. “Time management and efficient scheduling are the biggest skills that I learned given the various meetings, appointments and timetables that were involved with my internship.”
