Elon Football Summer Internship Series: Destin Flloyd

ELON, N.C.- Continuing our series on internships our football players participated in this summer, we focus on Defensive lineman Destin Flloyd who interned with McMackin Advisors remotely, serving as an investment analyst with the goal of obtaining financial industry experience.

Prior to starting his internship, Flloyd first had to submit his résumé along with an example of relevant coursework that he had at Elon. The Havelock, N.C. native then had two interviews with the founder of McMackin Advisors, Jack McMackin, and his supervisor and senior advisor, Cecilia Marihart, which ultimately led to his internship offer.

Flloyd’s main responsibility during his internship consisted of researching companies in and out, examining the companies’ operations, earnings, management, and a culmination of other aspects of each individual company.

“We would also look at what “good” the company is doing by comparing their operations and business model to the Laudato Si Encyclical and the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Because McMackin Advisors was a venture capital firm, Flloyd discussed how his main challenge that he faced was trying to do research on companies with little to no available information. “A majority of the companies were just growing, so they did not have a lot of information to be gained.” 

However, Flloyd’s time at Elon helped him gain the skills necessary to keep up with others at the company.

“My experience at Elon has given me multiple technical skills and business acumen which allowed me to stay on pace with the others at McMackin Advisors.”

Flloyd’s favorite experience during his internship was getting the opportunity to network with other interns at the company. 

My favorite part of the internship were the “happy hours”. This is where all of us interns got together and just talked and learned more about each other.

Flloyd learned several new skills from his internship that will help him in his remaining time at Elon. “I learned even more financial and business acumen that I will be able to use. I also learned even more research skills that would help with class assignments.”
