Phoenix Begins Three-Match Road Swing at Northeastern

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's soccer team travels to Boston to begin a three-match road swing as the Phoenix faces Colonial Athletic Association foe Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.

The Matchup
• Elon leads the all-time series over Northeastern 5-2-1 with both teams gearing up for its ninth meeting on Saturday.
• Both teams recently met on the soccer pitch in 2019 with the Phoenix coming away with a 3-1 victory at Rudd Field.
• The last win for the Huskies in the series came in 2018 when Northeastern defeated the Phoenix, 1-0, in overtime.
 
Last Time Out
• The Phoenix faced UNCW in its most recent contest on Saturday, Oct. 9, with the maroon and gold prevailing with a 4-3 overtime victory over its intrastate rival at Rudd Field.
Kasper Lehm scored the golden goal in the 99th minute of the match off an assist from Scott Vatne as Elon earned its first win over the Seahawks since 2015.
• Elon trailed 1-0 early before scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. UNCW came back with two unanswered goals of its own to tie the match at 3-3 after regulation.
Jack Edwards scored his fifth goal of the season while sophomore Jannik Videbaek and freshman Calle Edelstam registered their first goals of the year.
 
Lehm Named CAA Defensive Player of the Week
• Lehm was rewarded as the CAA's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 11. Lehm became the second straight Phoenix player to earn the award after Videbaek was honored the week before.
• The Odense, Denmark, native tallied four total points for the Phoenix against No. 3 Duke and versus UNCW. Lehm had an assist in Elon's matchup against the Blue Devils, helping the Phoenix score just the third goal allowed by Duke's defense at the point all season.
• The defender later scored his first goal of the year on his game-winner in overtime while adding another assist in the Phoenix's 4-3 win over UNCW.
 
Competitive Slate Ahead
• Elon is in the midst of a competitive slate of games on its schedule, facing four teams that are ranked or were receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 poll in No. 3 Duke, UNCW, No. 21 West Virginia and Hofstra.
• The combined records of Elon's remaining opponents in the month of October is currently 29-12-6.
 
About Elon
• The Phoenix enters its matchup versus Northeastern tied for second in the CAA standings with 10 points and its 3-1-1 ledger. James Madison remains atop the league standings with 12 points and a 4-0 mark in the CAA.
• Elon has scored 14 goals on the season with its four-goal outburst versus UNCW the most it has scored in a single game since facing College of Charleston in 2019.
• Edwards leads the Phoenix with his five goals on the year. The Oak Ridge, N.C., native also leads the Phoenix with 17 shots and ranks second in the CAA in game-winning goals with three.
Peter Wentzel leads the league in shutouts per game at .500 and is second in the CAA in goals-against average at 0.95. The redshirt junior is also third in the CAA in save percentage .773.
 
Scouting Northeastern
• Northeastern enters the contest 9-3-1 and 3-1 in CAA play. The Huskies sit fourth in the league standings with their nine points.
• The Huskies have won two straight games after coming off a 4-0 victory over Brown on Tuesday. Northeastern defeated Delaware, 3-2, in its last CAA contest last Saturday.
• Northeastern has scored 28 goals this season with six players having tallied three or more goals. Redshirt junior forward Timothy Ennin has a team-best five goals on the season while sophomore Federico Tellez paces the squad with his 16 points on four goals and a team-best eight assists.
• Colby Hegarty has played every minute in goal for the Huskies, posting a 1.31 GAA with 58 saves.

Elon continues its road trek to No. 21 West Virginia next Saturday, Oct. 23. That game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
