PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Elon University men's soccer team earned a point in Colonial Athletic Association play battling Drexel to a scoreless draw on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 2, at Vidas Field.
The draw was the first of the season for the Phoenix, who moved to 5-4-1 overall on the year and 2-1-1 in the CAA. The Dragons moved to 4-4-1 and 2-1-1 in league play.
The Rundown
The Dragons opened the match with a 5-0 shot advantage over the Phoenix in the first 20 minutes of action in the game. Only one of those attempts was on frame, which came from Michael McCarty's try in the eighth minute, but it was saved by Elon netminder
Peter Wentzel.
Elon finally got its first shots of the match in the 31
st minute as
Seth Hammond had a pair of shots, but both were off target. The Dragons went into the break with a 5-2 advantage in shots and took the two lone corners of the first half.
At the start of the second half, Elon started to push the momentum towards its favor.
Jalen Weatherspoon had Elon's first shot on goal in the 46
th minute, but Drexel's Cameron Sanders made his first save of the match.
The Phoenix gained a huge advantage in the 54
th minute as Drexel's Youri Senden was handed a red card for an open field tackle on an Elon attack. Elon put pressure on the Dragons with its man-up advantage, outshooting Drexel 7-1 from that point on until the end of regulation. However, only
Jack Edwards' attempt in the 86
th minute was on frame as the match went into overtime still scoreless.
Both teams combined for two shots in the two extra sessions. A red card on the Phoenix in the 95
th minute put both squads back on an even playing field, but neither could find the evasive golden goal as the match ended with the 0-0 draw.
Notes
• Elon finished the match winning the shot battle, 11-8, with three shots on goal. The Dragons had six corners compared to two for Elon.

Scott Vatne had three shots off the bench to lead Elon in his first game since Sept. 5 versus UTRGV. Vatne played 58 minutes on the day
• The Phoenix played 20 players in the match with every player seeing at least 12 minutes on the pitch.

Peter Wentzel recorded his CAA-best fifth shutout of the season. Sanders corralled three saves for Drexel.

The Phoenix heads to Durham to face Duke in a nonconference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 5. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
