Road Trip Sees Volleyball at Northeastern This Weekend

BOSTON, MASS. – Elon University volleyball is in Boston, Mass. this weekend for a pair of CAA matches at Northeastern on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 23-24. Both matches are scheduled for 2 p.m. starts inside the Cabot Center.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Northeastern Athletics is requiring that guests aged 12 and older who attend campus indoor athletic events present proof of full vaccination or have a negative COVID-19 (PCR or antigen) test result within 72 hours of the event date. Fans will also be asked to present a matching photo identification cared with the same name as the COVID-19 vaccination card (State Issued Driver's License, State Issued ID Card or Passport).

ABOUT THE PHOENIX
- The Phoenix (13-7, 8-2 CAA) earned a pair of straight-set victories over visiting UNCW last Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16-17 at Schar Center.
- Elon has won four in a row against the Seahawks and cuts their lead in the all-time series to 24-19.
- With the wins, the maroon and gold remains atop the CAA standings. James Madison enters the weekend in second place at 12-4 overall and 6-2 in league play, and Towson is currently third with a 17-3 record and a 5-3 mark against CAA opponents.
- Elon's eight CAA wins are the most in a season since the program joined the conference in 2014. It's also the most conference wins for the Phoenix since the team went 9-7 during the 2012 season as a member of the SoCon.
- Through matches on Oct. 21, Elon ranks second in the league in kills per set (12.69), hitting percentage (.252) and assists per set (11.61).
- Leah Daniel leads the CAA and ranks 38th in the nation in kills per set (4.09) and 44th nationally in total kills (286). She is also first in the league in attacks per set (10.59), points (313.0) and points per set (4.47). Haylie Clark ranks first in the conference in assists per set (9.67) and is second in totals assists (677). Jordan Gower ranks second in the CAA in total digs (308) and digs per set (4.40), and Jenn Krzeminski is second in hitting percentage (.357) and third in blocks per set (1.13).

LOVE NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
- Sydney Love earned her first career weekly honor on Monday, Oct. 18 as she was named the league's Rookie of the Week.
- The freshman from Chesapeake, Va. swung for a .600 hitting percentage against UNCW. She added 12 kills (3.00/set), three digs and three blocks (one solo) to her series totals.
- The honor marks the fourth time this season that an Elon player has picked up a weekly honor. Daniel was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27, and Clark was chosen as Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 4.

CAREER LEADERS WATCHLIST
- Daniel enters this weekend with 1,135 career kills.
- The Zionsville, Ind. native needs eight kills to tie Juliena Gignon (2003-06) for 10th on Elon's All-Time Career Leaders list.
- Velma Degree (1990-93) is Elon's all-time leader in kills with 1,461.
 
THE SERIES
- The Huskies (9-9, 5-3) are ahead in the all-time series, 9-5.
- The teams last met in the opening round of the 2019 CAA Conference Championship, hosted by Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. The No. 4 Huskies held a 6-3 in the fifth set, but kills by Julia Crabtree and Daniel knotted the score at 11-11. Clark then pushed a ball to the back corner of the court that the diving Huskies libero couldn't get to as the No. 5 Phoenix advanced to the CAA Semifinals for the first time in program history.

SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
- Northeastern received one first-place vote and was picked to finish third in the CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll with 48 points. Nailah Jenkins and Erica Staunton represented the Huskies on the Preseason All-CAA Team.
- The Huskies split their CAA series with Delaware last weekend. After dropping the first match 3-0 on Saturday, Northeastern responded with a 3-0 win on Sunday.
- Jenkins leads the team with 167 kills, followed by Evelyn Gonzalez at 141 and Staunton at 126. Samantha Shupe has a team-high 329 assists, while Kayla Martin and Jenkins have served 22 and 20 aces, respectively. Martin anchors the back row with 280 digs and Marika Virthe has recorded 77 blocks (nine solo).
- As a team, the Huskies lead the CAA with 14.74 digs per set and are second with 34.24 attacks per set.
- Martin's 280 digs rank fourth in the conference.
