Phoenix Finishes with 1-1 Draw Against Delaware

ELON, N.C.—The Elon University women's soccer team recorded its first draw of the season on Oct. 3 when it tied Delaware 1-1.

"It's hard to fault the players today," said head coach Neil Payne. "They really committed and gave us everything. We just need that little bit more quality in the final piece."

THE RUNDOWN
-There were not many opportunities to score in the opening stanza as the teams combined for three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
-The Phoenix's lone shot on target of the half was taken by Carson Jones in the 25th minute, but it was saved by the Delaware goalkeeper.
-The Blue Hens got on the board first in the 65th minute when Delaware's Katie Hackley found the back of the net for the first time this season.
-Elon was quick to respond as Carson Jones scored off a free kick from Lily Harkes just two minutes later to erase the Blue Hen lead. Harkes' assist was the third of her career, while Jones' goal was the third of the season.

-Following back-to-back shots on goal from the Blue Hens, Lydia Totten ended regulation with the final attempt on goal. But the shot was once again saved, sending the match into overtime.
-After each team fired one shot in the first overtime period, the Phoenix picked up the momentum in the final 10 minutes of competition, outshooting the Blue Hens 4-0. The last chance to score for either team came on the 109th minute when Kennedy Jones took a shot to the bottom left corner of the net, but a diving save was made to keep the score tied and make the final score 1-1.

NOTES
-Carson Jones and Totten paced the Phoenix in shots (3), followed by Kennedy Jones, Molly Mahoney, Abby Fusca and Sarah Bevington with two apiece. Hannah Doherty also chipped in one.
-Despite Elon holding a 15-12 advantage in shots, both teams took seven attempts on goal.
-In goal, McKenna Dalfonso (5-4-1) totaled a season-high six saves, just one shy of her career best.
-After today's game, Elon stands at 5-4-1 (0-1-1 CAA) on the season, while Delaware stands at 4-6-1 (1-0-1 CAA).
