Fusca’s Golden Goal Secures 2-1 Overtime Win in Elon’s Season Finale Against Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.— Abby Fusca scored her second game-winning goal of her career earlier today, Oct. 31, as Elon women's soccer defeated Drexel in overtime in its final match of the 2021 season, 2-1.

"I couldn't be more proud of the senior class and the team today," said head coach Neil Payne. "It was a very good away win against a good, organized team. We started the game well, played some good soccer and finished strongly. There were two very good goals from Carson (Jones) and Abby. It was important that we finished the season strong and with a solid win. We did that."

THE RUNDOWN
-The Phoenix got going early as Carson Jones found the back of the net in the 10th minute off an outlet pass from Katie Lowe to put Elon up 1-0. The goal was Jones' sixth of the season. -Drexel's lone opportunity to tie the score came in the 23rd minute off a shot on goal by Rory Klingensmith, but it was saved by McKenna Dalfonso.
-In the 69th minute, an Elon handball in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Dragons, which made it past Dalfonso to tie the game at one.
-Just three minutes later, Katie Lowe had the final shot on target during regulation, which was saved by the Drexel goalkeeper to send the match into overtime.
-The Phoenix outshot the Dragons 3-1 in the seven minutes of extra time, with all three Elon shots being taken by Fusca.
-With just under four minutes remaining on the clock, Fusca fired a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal to end the match in favor of the maroon and gold.
