Volleyball Defeats Davidson 3-2 on Senior Day

ELON, N.C. – Haylie Clark turned in her second triple-double of the season, Leah Daniel scored a career-high 30 kills, and Jordan Gower recorded a career-high 33 digs as the Elon University volleyball team defeated Davidson 3-2 on Saturday, March 20 at Schar Center. The match marked Senior Day for the Phoenix (4-3, 2-2 CAA).

"What a great way to celebrate our seniors today," said head coach Mary Tendler. "It was a hard-fought win with a lot of runs by both teams. I'm proud of us for finding a way to get the last push in the fifth set."

THE RUNDOWN
The Wildcats (2-9, 1-7 A10) opened the first set with a 4-1 run, but a Natalie Cummins kill allowed the maroon and gold to pull even at 7-7. The set remained close until Clark assisted Daniel to knot the score at 18-18. The kill began an 8-1 push as Elon earned the first set point at 25-19.

After Davidson responded with a 25-18 decision in Set Two, the Phoenix built an early 9-2 advantage in the third set. An attack error by Clark allowed the 'Cats to pull to within a point at 12-11, but the visitors were never able to get any closer in the set. A 5-1 run down the stretch helped Elon retake the match lead with a 25-16 tally.

Davidson wouldn't go down without a fight, though, as the guests forced a fifth set with a close 25-23 score in Set Four. Elon looked like it would clinch the victory with a 23-19 lead, but the 'Cats earned the next six points to keep their hopes alive.

With both sides even at 5-5 in the decisive set, Davidson committed three straight errors and Elon never looked back. Ahead 10-7, a Davidson service error and three consecutive kills by Daniel brought up match point. The 'Cats then had another attack error as the Phoenix earned the win with a 15-7 tally.
