Women’s Soccer Earns Fourth Shutout of the Season with 1-0 Victory Over American

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Elon University women's soccer registered its fourth shutout of the season on Sept. 12 when it recorded a 1-0 win over American.

"It was a solid road win for us against a good team," said head coach Neil Payne. "You need plenty of character to grind out Sunday games and we brought that today. We missed a couple of chances that could've given us a cushion, but we were resolute in our defending towards the end of the game to see out a good win."

THE RUNDOWN
-Sarah Bevington got the Phoenix going in the 17th minute when she scored on a header to the high right corner off a pass from Abby Fusca. The goal was her second of the season.
-Just four minutes later, Molly Mahoney fired the final shot on goal of the half to the lower left corner, but it was saved by the American goalkeeper to keep the score 1-0.
-The Eagles made a strong attempt to even the score in the second stanza, outshooting the Phoenix 13-5 with five shots on target. However, McKenna Dalfonso saved each attempt to secure the win for the maroon and gold.

NOTES
-Today's match marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
-McKenna Dalfonso (4-3) matched her season high in saves (5), which she previously set at NC State on Sept. 5.
-Through seven games, Bevington, Kayla Hodges and Lydia Totten lead the Phoenix in scoring with two goals apiece, while Fusca paces the maroon and gold in assists with three.
-The shutout marks the 10th in Dalfonso's career. The sophomore now ranks 10th all-time in program history.
-With the win, the Phoenix improves to 4-3 on the season.
