ELON, N.C. — Junior goalkeeper
McKenna Dalfonso has been named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Elon women's soccer team shut out Towson in its regular-season finale Sunday.
This marks Dalfonso's fourth career Defensive Player of the Week honor, her last coming almost a year ago to the day, on Oct. 25, 2021. She becomes the second Phoenix player to receive the award this season, joining senior co-captain
Beky Myers (Sept. 26).
Dalfonso was sensational in goal as Elon battled Towson to a scoreless draw. In playing all but 40 seconds, she faced 19 shots and made six saves, her most since recording six against Hofstra on Oct. 24, 2021. Behind her, the Phoenix notched its eighth shutout of the year, its most since registering eight in 2015. Elon's five shutouts in CAA play were tied for the league lead and marked its most since joining the conference before the 2014 season.
Dalfonso enters Thursday's CAA Championship quarterfinal match against Towson with 19 career shutouts, one shy of the program record set by Heather Kline from 1988-91. Dalfonso's seven shutouts this year are tied for the 35th most in the country. They're also tied for the seventh most by an Elon goalkeeper and are the most since Sydney Little notched seven in 2009.
