WILMINGTON, N.C. — UNCW's Kayla Burroughs scored less than five minutes into the match and the Seahawks never let up, upending the Elon women's soccer team 4-0 on Thursday at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Phoenix fell to 6-5-2 overall and 2-3 in CAA play. The Seahawks improved to 7-5-1 and 3-2 against league opponents.
THE RUNDOWN
- UNCW came out on the attack, tallying a shot and a corner kick within the first minute. That approach ultimately yielded the Seahawks the game's first goal just four minutes later, when Morgan Nanni sent a looping pass into the box and Burroughs came charging in to slam the ball into the back of the net.
- UNCW continued to apply pressure on the Elon back line, and in the 20th minute, it struck for its second goal, as Chloe Mills lofted a pass from about 40 yards out into the box and Burroughs corralled the ball near the goal and scored.
- The Phoenix's best first-half chance didn't come until the 39th minute, when Ashlee Brehio made a great run up the middle and then fired a shot from the top of the box that required a diving save by Seahawks goalkeeper Hanna Wise.
- Elon looked like it might get on the scoreboard in the first minute of the second half, as Bethany Harford came across a loose ball in the box and quickly got off a shot. The ball, however, was blocked by a UNCW defender.
- About 90 seconds later, the Seahawks picked up their third goal, as Burroughs slipped a pass to Madison Henry in the middle of the box and the midfielder deposited it into the back of the net.
- Elon threatened to score on several occasions the rest of the way — including in the 77th minute, when Kelly Degnan ripped a shot from point-blank range that required a one-handed save by Wise. The Phoenix, however, couldn't convert on any of their chances, and the Seahawks tacked on their fourth and final goal with 64 seconds remaining.
NOTES
- UNCW entered Thursday ranked first in the CAA and 23rd nationally in corner kicks per game (6.92), and it drew nine against Elon.
- The Seahawks outshot the Phoenix 15-7 but only held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
- Burroughs' five points (two goals and one assist) were tied for the most by an Elon opponent this season. Howard's Melea Earley also had five on Aug. 21.
- After scoring at least one goal in each of its first 10 matches, the Phoenix has been shut out in two of its last three.
