ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's soccer team fell in a 2-1 battle in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Final to Hofstra on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Rudd Field.
In a rematch of last year's league final, the Pride (14-3-3) earned their second consecutive CAA championship after taking a 2-0 lead in the contest over the Phoenix (11-4-3). Elon was able to get one back in the final seconds on a Kasper Lehm goal to settle the final score.
Lehm was named to the All-Tournament Team, joining teammates Franc Gamiz Quer and Ben Rosenblatt.
THE RUNDOWN
• Hofstra scored off a takeaway near the midfield for its first goal of the match. The Pride's Roc Carles found Oliver Svalander on the right side near the top of the box, and Svalander was able to send the ball past the outstretched hands of Ryan Bilichuk in the 39
th minute.
• Elon was held to one shot in the first 75 minutes of the game, but came on the attack for the evasive equalizer in the 75
th minute after earning a corner kick. Lehm serviced the ball into the box where it dangerously danced around after a shot by Myson Darden was blocked. Mason Duval got his foot on the carom, but Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel was able to corral it.
• The Pride doubled its lead in the 86
th minute off a set piece. Hofstra earned a corner kick and had its initial shot blocked by the Phoenix defense before Francesco Perinelli converted on the rebound to put the Pride ahead 2-0.
• With the Phoenix throwing numbers forward in the final seconds, Elon prevented the shutout as Lehm scored his first goal of the season with 12 seconds remaining. The senior got past the defense and was able to convert in the final six to bring the score to 2-1.
NOTES
• Elon finishes as the CAA tournament runner-up for the second straight year and a runner-up for a league championship for the third time in program history.
• Lehm became the 15
th unique goal scorer for the Phoenix this season.
• The Pride won the shot battle, 13-8, including a 6-1 advantage in the opening stanza.
• The Phoenix's all-time record against the Pride falls to 1-8-1.
