Softball Swept in Doubleheader at ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Elon University softball team had a pair of setbacks in its doubleheader at East Carolina on Tuesday, March 15, as the Phoenix fell in the first game to the Pirates, 8-0, before dropping a 3-0 decision in the nightcap.
 
The Phoenix fall to 13-11 overall on the year while ECU improved to 13-11.
 
Game One: East Carolina 8, Elon 0 (6)
The Phoenix had a one-run game get away in the bottom of the sixth. East Carolina scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from pitcher Logyn Estes. Estes drove in Chandley Garner, who reached earlier on a leadoff single to start the inning.
 
The Pirates broke open the scoring in their home half of the sixth, plating seven runs to earn the eventual 8-0 win.
 
Elon was held to only two hits in the contest, which came from Carley Davis and Megan White in the top of the second. ECU recorded six hits in the contest.
 
McKenzie Weber took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the year. The Overland Park, Kan., native pitched 5.0 innings and allowed five earned runs with four strikeouts.
 
Game Two: East Carolina 3, Elon 0
The Pirates struck first on the scoreboard in game two. Estes had a two-out RBI single up the middle to put ECU ahead 2-0 over the Phoenix.
 
ECU added another run in its home half of the fourth again with two outs. Jocelyn Alonso doubled to left field to push another run across the dish to increase the Pirates' lead to 3-0.
 
The Phoenix only had two base runners reach in the remainder of the game after that point as ECU held on for the 3-0 win.
 
Davis singled to add her second hit between the two games as the Phoenix only registered three hits total in the second contest. Elon did leave six runners stranded compared to four for the Pirates.
 
Alexa Nemeth was handed the loss in the circle to fall to 1-2 overall on the year. She pitched 2.2 innings with seven hits allowed and two runs given up. Taylor Cherry pitched 3.1 innings in relief and had three strikeouts with one hit and one run allowed.
 
On Deck
The Phoenix begins a three-game set this weekend, March 19-20, versus UNCG starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. st Hunt Softball Park.
