Phoenix Captures Series Over College of Charleston in Rubber Match, 7-1

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association series win of the season, defeating College of Charleston in the rubber match, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon, April 10, at Hunt Softball Park.

The Phoenix improved to 20-18 overall this season while moving to 3-6 in the CAA standings. College of Charleston fell to 7-27 with a 2-6 ledger in league play.

At the Plate
• Elon had six hits in the game with four of them coming from the bats of Rebecca Murray (2-for-3) and Megan White (2-for-3). The duo combined for five RBI with Murray also adding a home run and a stolen base to her stat line.

In the Circle
Alexa Nemeth picked up her second win of the series in the circle, improving to 5-2 after pitching 4.0 scoreless innings in relief. She also struck out three batters.
McKenna McCard went 2.0 innings to start the game and struck out four batters while allowing two hits.

The Rundown
• Elon got into a jam in the top of the second inning. The Cougars had a pair of runners reach on a pair of singles with one out before a wild pitch advanced both into scoring position with two outs. CofC loaded the bases on a walk before McCard got out of the inning with a strikeout to leave the bags full.
• Murray got the Phoenix on the scoreboard on a solo home run in the bottom of the third. The Indian Trail, N.C., native led off the frame with her fourth round tripper of the season to put the Phoenix ahead 1-0.
• White and Murray combined to push across two more runs in the home half of the fourth. Chloe Hatzopoulos drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. White then lined a single up the middle to allow Hatzopoulos to cross home plate on the RBI. Allee Seering relieved White on the bases and stole second with two outs to move into scoring position. Seering would cross the dish on Murray's second RBI of the game on her single through the left side that put the Phoenix up 3-0.
• The Phoenix tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. White singled up the middle with two outs, scoring a pair of runners to push Elon's advantage to 5-0.
• Elon completed its scoring in the bottom of the sixth, adding two more runs on an error and a Hatzopoulos RBI single to go ahead 7-0.
• The Cougars answered with a run of its own in the top of the seventh to break up the shutout, but Elon recovered to retire the side and close out the series with the 7-1 victory.

Notables
• Elon head coach Kathy Bocock reached 264 career wins at Elon, four wins shy of tying Sue Leonard (1990-98) for second on the program's all-time career wins list.
• Murray stole her CAA-best 22nd base of the season, the fifth-best total in a single-season at the Division I level in school history. Her 37 career stolen bases move her into the program's top-10 career list.
• With her two hits today, Murray has tallied 13 multi-hit games this season, leading the team, and had two multi-hit outings in the series.
