TOWSON, Md. – The Elon University softball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end as the Phoenix fell to Towson in its Colonial Athletic Association series finale, 4-1, on Sunday, April 24, at the Towson Softball Stadium.
The Phoenix (25-19, 8-7 CAA) settled for its third straight series win as Towson (14-28, 4-11 CAA) avoided the series sweep.
AT THE PLATE
• Elon outhit the Tigers in the contest, 5-4, with
Carley Davis having a 2-for-3 performance to lead the maroon and gold at the plate. The Phoenix left eight runners stranded on the base paths compared to three for the Tigers.
IN THE CIRCLE
• Isley Duggins received the loss for Elon after going 5.2 innings with four runs and four hits allowed. She also struck out two batters.
THE RUNDOWN
• The Phoenix had a great opportunity to plate the first run of the game in the top of the first.
Rebecca Murray reached on a two-out single and advanced to third on another single to left center by Davis. Murray tried to score from third while Davis attempted to steal second, but Murray was called out at home to end the threat.
• Towson scored the first run of the game in its home half of the first on a sacrifice fly. The Tigers had runners reached on a pair of walks before both were moved over on a sacrifice bunt. A foul out to left enabled a runner to score and put the Tigers up 1-0.
• The Tigers added its second run of the contest in the bottom of the second also courtesy of a sac fly as Towson opened the frame with a triple before plating the second run on a fly out to right to move ahead 2-0.
• A solo home run in the fourth tacked on another run for the Tigers to put the Phoenix in a 3-0 hole. Sydni Byers drove a two-out dinger over the wall in left field to increase their lead.
• Elon finally plated a run in the top of the sixth. Murray reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a fielder's choice. A double steal allowed Murray to move to third before she scored on a wild pitch to bring the Phoenix within two, 3-1.
• Towson got that run back in the bottom of the sixth. A solo home run from the Tigers pushed their lead back to three, 4-1.
• The Phoenix attempted a final rally in the top of the seventh. Elon had two runners reach with one out, but Towson induced the final outs to escape with the win.
On Deck
The Phoenix closes out its road swing with a visit to its in-state league rival UNCW next weekend, April 30-May 1.
