Phoenix Falls to Blue Hens in Series Finale

NEWARK, Del. – The Elon University softball team could not overcome a six-run fifth inning from Delaware as the Phoenix fell to the Blue Hens, 7-2, in the Colonial Athletic Association series finale on Sunday, April 3, at the Delaware Softball Stadium.
 
The loss dropped the Phoenix 17-17 overall and 1-5 in the CAA standings. Delaware improved to 20-11 and goes to 4-2 in league play.
 
At the Plate
• Elon had three hits as a team in the game with Rebecca Murray leading the way at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance. She also added a double to her stat line and stole two bases to increase her CAA-leading total to 19.
Carley Davis had both RBI for the Phoenix, who left four runners on base.
 
In the Circle
Taylor Cherry started the game in the circle for the Phoenix and fell to 4-6 overall on the year. The rookie tossed 4.2 innings and allowed five hits and three runs with six strikeouts.
 
The Rundown
• Elon scored first in the top half of the opening inning. Murray reached on a double to leadoff the contest and moved to third on a fielder's choice before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left by Davis to put Elon up 1-0.
• The Phoenix held control of the game until the Blue Hens put together a rally with two outs to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Elon retired the first two batters of the frame, but Delaware scored six runs on the strength of five straight hits to move in front, 6-1 after the fifth.
• Elon got a run back in the top of the sixth. Murray opened on a single and stole second to move into scoring position. The Phoenix had two runners in scoring position with no outs after a walk and a double steal, but was only able to bring in Murray on an RBI from Davis after an error on the Blue Hens.
• Delaware got the run back in its half of the sixth, putting Blue Hens' lead back up to five, 7-2 after an RBI single up the middle.
• Elon went down in order to close out the game in the top of the seventh as the Blue Hens secured their 7-2 win.
 
On Deck
The Phoenix is back at home on Wednesday, April 6, hosting North Carolina A&T for a midweek contest. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
